A Place Without A Name: Alright, saying it one last time.
Even if I’m stubborn and don’t feel like I should need to apologize for something that could have been handled so much more… nicely. I apologize for in any way shape or form coming off as ‘defending whitewashing’ to some people. Since I was mostly trying to have a discussion about how lighting…
I still love you Fenfen, atleast you’re being mature. The argument in itself is ridiculous. People need to let it go.
I love you too, dear. ♥ And I am trying, even if I’m a bit of a stubborn git at times. xD The argument over my original post, most certainly. Over whitewashing as a whole, not so much. But I think, hopefully, now, people will forget my original post in a few days.
Its not your fault, I honestly didn’t pick up any hint of support of whitewashing in your whole OP, I’m sure everyone was riled up before hand and misinterpreted what you said as support. It happens, just don’t let it get to you. I got your back.
I think part of it was talking on how the light changes skin tone. Which I understand better now, as it’s really changing the hue (mildly), and the lightest parts on anyone are going to be the highlights. That doesn’t mean a really really dark character can appear white as… well, snow. Though Fenris’ and Sebastian’s skin confuse me still. I know Sebastian is mostly tanned (but why he looks so pale in some screens I don’t know). And Fenris’ skin… sometimes looks peachy. O_o Which… also confuses me. But, meh. Unless someone would like to explain that to me, I’ll just continue on with my life.
And I think that, since there has been quite a bit more of whitewashing (intentional or not) going around, my ‘don’t pass judgement so quickly’ didn’t come off as well. And I will try not to. xD Thank you, Vampy. ♥
You’re welcome dear. Yeaaaah I don’t know about the whole whitewashing thing. Honestly I don’t care lol Art is art and should be appreciated as such. And that artwork (no matter what people say) is amazing beyond belief. If they dont like it, they can go make their own. :D It wasn’t even the skin that bothered me, it was Isabela’s arm! Did you see it? Its like it dislocated lol but still amazing art nonetheless. I just wish everyone would get along already.
As far as whitewashing goes in general, it’s basically, people feeling that dark skin is inferior, defective, or less than white skin. That someone with dark skin my be portrayed with lighter skin in order to be ‘beautiful’. Ect. People of color, in American society at least, have always been thought of as lesser. And people who (intentionally) change a dark character’s skin to white are basically fucking everything up. Now, I’ve seen artists do it unintentionally. As many novice artists have a… not as great grasp on color, lighting, and other such things. And often the only way to figure that all out is to play with it until you understand it, and obviously look at photos or people irl. That’s the biggest thing. I don’t think novice artists simply need to have their ass reamed just because you think you need to white knight. I think commenting that the character’s skin is too light is enough as a first step. And then carried on from there until the person understands. (Obviously anyone doing it intentionally won’t give a fuck what you think and will continue to whitewash the character to their heart’s content).
And whitewashing bothers me because there are people in real life that use creams to burn their skin white. As if that is more beautiful, or their skin color is defective. (It’s in the Middle East I believe. Perhaps even places like India) Of course I have a cynical amusement toward that. In that you have women and men there ‘bleaching out their skin’ so that can look white. And then you’ve got white people here tanning their skin so they can look darker. It’s like each side thinks the other is more exotic or beautiful. And it makes me laugh in the most sad way. Because I think everyone is beautiful and shouldn’t really need to change themselves. (Obviously of course, tans don’t last forever like these creams. But if you do them often enough they fuck up your skin permanently.)
And yes, I did see her arm. xD; Ahh… There were, in general, a few things wrong with that cover. I think most people just don’t like it because Isabela is the darkest character there is in the games thus far. Or close to it. And people keep depicting her with very pale skin. When her skin isn’t pale at all. While I can agree that art is also preference and subjective, and a bunch of other things. It’s such a messy subject. And my friend Quinn made a good point that depending on gamma of a screen stuff changes drastically. Which I agree with. I remember having my really old screen where the gamma was dark (couldn’t turn it up any higher). And I’d color something on it. And then look on a different screen and it would be complete shit, or lighter than I thought. 8| That causes a lot of issues.
its understandable and its sad that people purposely whitewash. I didnt even notice on the cover because of the resolution on my screen lol I’m just sitting there like, Whut are you guys yelling about? Of course she looked like a bloody corpse on my screen :D And Varric looked like isabela’s color. I dont know, the cover needs to be recolored. But still, people dont need to react that way. People are more likely to throw insults than have a debate. OR blow it out of proportion. Anyway, Either way, Dont support whitewashing, but I seriously do not think that was the creators intentions, NOR should you have been yelled at for stating the obvious logic. :)

You made it clear that you were not defending whitewashing. You’re responsible for what you’re saying, but NOT for what they understand. It’s their fault for misunderstanding, not yours.

Don’t apologize for their misunderstanding. It’s because they lack the mental capacity to understand what you type that’s the problem. You stay as you are. Let them be vicious and tell them they need to reread it a few dozen times.
